What is an IBAN (International Bank Account Number)?
An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is an internationally agreed system for identifying bank accounts across national borders, facilitating smooth, error-free automated payment processing.
The Origin and Purpose of IBAN
Before the introduction of the IBAN standard (governed by ISO 13616 and ECBS), cross-border wire transfers were notoriously prone to delays and misrouting. Different countries used entirely disparate domestic account numbering schemes, bank routing codes, and clearing identifiers.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Banking Standards (ECBS) created the IBAN standard to provide a single, universally recognized format that contains all necessary routing and account data within one alphanumeric string.
Where Are IBANs Used?
IBANs are standard across all 27 European Union member states, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and a growing number of countries across the Middle East, North Africa, and Caribbean (such as UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Brazil, and Tunisia).
In the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), IBANs are mandatory for all euro-denominated credit transfers and direct debits.
Anatomy of an IBAN
An IBAN never exceeds 34 alphanumeric characters and is structured as follows:
- Country Code (2 letters): ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (e.g.,
DEfor Germany,ATfor Austria,FRfor France). - Check Digits (2 numbers): MOD-97 checksum calculated to verify the entire string integrity.
- Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN): Country-specific mix of bank codes, branch codes, and account numbers.
Example IBAN
Consider this standard German IBAN: DE89370400440532013000
DE= Country (Germany)89= Check digits37040044= Bank code (BLZ)0532013000= Local account number
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an IBAN the same as a BIC/SWIFT code?
No. The IBAN identifies an individual bank account, while the BIC (Bank Identifier Code) identifies the specific financial institution globally.
Can I validate IBANs programmatically?
Yes. Developers use our IBAN Validation API to verify IBAN formatting and MOD-97 check digits instantly at scale.
Are IBANs confidential?
While sharing your IBAN is necessary to receive payments, you should protect it against unauthorized direct debits by only sharing with trusted counterparties and employers.
