How to Extract or Lookup BIC (SWIFT Code) from an IBAN

Understanding the relationship between IBANs and Bank Identifier Codes (BICs), SEPA requirements, and automated bank directory resolution.

Is the BIC Embedded Inside the IBAN?

A common misconception is that the BIC (Bank Identifier Code or SWIFT code) is entirely encoded within the IBAN string. While national bank codes (such as the German 8-digit Bankleitzahl or French sort codes) are embedded in the IBAN, the full 8 or 11-character BIC is usually not directly derivable by simple string slicing alone for most countries.

Instead, automated systems must parse the bank routing code component from the IBAN and query an authoritative national bank directory (such as our Bundesbank-backed dataset for Germany) to retrieve the correct BIC.

SEPA Rule Changes: Is BIC Still Required?

Since the completion of the SEPA migration in the Eurozone, payment service providers no longer require a separate BIC for domestic and cross-border SEPA credit transfers within the SEPA zone. The IBAN alone is sufficient for routing. However, for non-SEPA international wire transfers or corporate reconciliation, having the correct BIC remains critical.

Example BIC Resolution

When you query our API with a German IBAN like DE89370400440532013000, our engine extracts the bank routing code 37040044 and resolves:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the BIC for any country's IBAN?

Currently, direct BIC resolution is fully active for Germany (via Bundesbank data). Expanded EU bank directory lookups are on our roadmap.

What is the difference between BIC and SWIFT?

They are terms for the exact same international bank identifier standard defined by ISO 9362.

How can I lookup BICs in my software?

Use our IBAN Validation API to automatically retrieve BICs alongside validation results.
